Her 3 children which of course were our cousins, were our favorites. We are lucky to have her in the same town. Sometimes I along with my sister would visit my maternal aunt – Aatya, we call her. “Chiku….”, “Chaku…” these calls from any of our houses would usually bring our day to a closure. This was the best time to learn to ride bikes on the deserted streets or playing badminton under the streetlights. After a heart fulfilling meal, we would go to bed. Sometimes it would be just joining the friend and her family for dinner. We would mostly end up at someone’s terrace or in the aangan (courtyard). Dabba party is like bringing tiffin from our houses at any one friend’s place and have it together.
KIDS BOLE CHUDIYA SERIES
Coming back to the evening, we would either go to our own houses for dinner which I would normally have, watching my first Korean series ‘Jewel in the Palace’ or Byomkesh Bakshi or we would plan the Dabba party. I know what you all are thinking but yes, I was an active participant in all of these. Ohh, what fun it was to visit each other’s annual festivals and cheer for them, at the same time to be rivals of each other in district level matches for chess, kho-kho, kabaddi or debate, speech, science exhibitions, etc. This provided an extra topic of discussion for us and a learning opportunity on how these schools were running, different techniques, methods, annual festivals, etc. Yes, we all belonged to different schools. Evening activities would include sitting together, doing our homework, chatting about our respective school and school friends. We all would retire home for quick snacks and again would gather right at the front after freshening up, ready to plan our next move. Lagori was followed by Dhabba Koti(where you hit someone with a cotton ball), sometimes cricket, baarf paani literally ice -water, Chain and so on … The whole afternoon fell short to us. Screaming, sweating and somehow managing to keep the kaccha limbus in the game, we were switching from one game to another. That was our playground and if not, the streets were always there. We had this big open ground right in between plots where my house stands today. Our gully was flooded with children of all age groups then (lucky me). The division of the team started with each one of them picking one by one from the remaining-Pappu, Sagar, Sonya, Vaishu, Shital, Shilpa, Madhuri, Moni, Me(Chiku), my best friend Chaku, some kaccha limbus – the youngest of us Kiran, Nisha, Pooja, Ajinkya and the list continues. The eldest of us all would be the leaders, Rinku and Shailu tai. This was a fun part, let me introduce you to all the players. In that scorching sun, we were deciding on the game to be played. All my gully friends were outside too by that time. I got up, did my daily chores, had my meal while watching Shaktimaan and then was ready to go outside. It was Sunday and as usual, the Kumbhakaran in me didn’t want to get up.
